Defamation: The link between Lying, Gas lighting and narcissism
Understanding how deception, reality distortion and self-protective behaviour can interact in harmful relationships Lying, gaslighting and narcissism are often discussed together because all three can involve manipulation, control and the distortion of truth. However, they are not the same thing. A person can lie without gaslighting, gaslight without having narcissistic personality disorder, and show narcissistic traits without engaging in deliberate emotional abuse. The link lies in the way deception can be used to protect an image, avoid responsibility and gain power over another person’s perception of reality.
Key distinctions
-
Lying is the act of knowingly saying something false or withholding the truth. It may be used to avoid consequences, protect privacy, hide shame, gain advantage or maintain control.
-
Gaslighting is a repeated pattern of manipulation in which one person denies, minimises or twists reality so another person begins to doubt their memory, judgement or perception and can be used to support a n original lie.
-
Narcissism exists on a spectrum. In everyday language it may describe self-centredness or entitlement, while narcissistic personality disorder is a clinical condition involving persistent patterns such as grandiosity, need for admiration and impaired empathy.
The link between lying, gaslighting and narcissism is best understood as a pattern of control. Lying can conceal the truth; gaslighting is designed to make someone doubt what really happened also to furher help conceal the truth; narcissistic traits can provide a powerful reason to deny accountability and protect a superior self-image.
When deception or lying is repeatedly used to confuse, silence or control another person, the issue is no longer a simple disagreement over facts. It is a serious relational pattern that deserves holding that person accountable for the damage they are causing.
